Bio: I went to prison at 16 years old for committing murder. I was sentenced to 102 years to life. While incarcerated I realized I had an identity of low-self esteem and self worth. I received my high school diploma in 2007 and that helped me begin to feel good about myself and I wanted to think differently. Years later I began to realize the traumas I carried since childhood and I began participating in self-help groups. As a result of that I grew up and started to think for myself, and in 2018 Governor Jerry Brown commuted my sentence form 102 years to life, to 19 years to life. This gave me the opportunity to show the Board of Prison terms that I had transformed my life and was ready to reenter society as a productive and contributing member. However, I was still denied parole the first time. But I was relentless to better myself and serve others. The second time I went to the parole board I was blessed to be granted parole. After coming home I met Assembly Member Mia Bonta, who gave me an opportunity at a career. I began as her district office scheduler and public safety advisor. Using my 20 years of lived experience, I was able to provide Mrs. Bonta with insight into the deficiencies within the prison system. Today, I am thankful to be working for the current California Attorney General Rob Bonta in the CARE Unit as a special Projects Coordinator. This opportunity I do not take lightly and I’m so thankful that I can represent the incarceration population. If you are looking to get into policy and legislative work I am here to help provide you with guidance into the numerous organizations and opportunities that are available.
